Seen
a day on the bay
9/1/20251 min read

The angle of the mast, white on blue
Jangling hardware in the wind
Bikes tick by, derailleurs clicking in the sun
Sunight glints off white shirts, white boats, white posts
The bell rings for the snack cart
This wind chime signals food
Joggers jog by, in pairs or solo, sunscreen shining
Friends reach out to say hello
The day is bright and clear
And I am energized, getting things done, motivated
I feel hopeful and my heart is full of songs
.
Today is a day to think of the value of work
And the humane treatment of workers
How we organize to
Get things done
And still have a life, a home, meaningful relationships
The balance between responsibility and rest
.
What does rest look like to you?
Working in the garden
Movement for fitness
General organization and upkeep
Sure
Creative outlets
Music and dance and art
Activities with no point
Wandering in a forest
Walking without a destination
Exploring new places
Taking the dog to the beach
Rest doesn’t have to be stillness
Rest can be active
.
Or it can be curling up with a good book
Snuggled into a comfy spot
Watching a show
Or just doing nothing
For a while
Until something sounds good
.
Madcap adventures
Solo travel
Explorations and
Wandering
Without plans
Discovering new places
Meeting new people
I used to love to tell the story
Of who I am
To someone new
Now I don’t have much to say
I’m no longer identifying with the need to explain who I am now by describing what I’ve done in the past
Reinventing myself
In someone else’s eyes
I’m looking for an observer
Someone who wants to know who I am now
And isn’t afraid to find out by watching and listening and
Paying attention
Reciting my history won’t tell you who you’re looking at
Only time will tell
Slowly revealed and deeply understood
Held down, lifted up, challenged
